Yarn-along – of shrugs and shawls and spiritual reading

~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~ Ginny at small things

Yarn-along – June 12, 2013

Well, good morning … it’s supposed to be awfully rainy and stormy here today, with a high around 89. Good thing I love to sit inside and knit, yes?

On the knitting needles: I’ve started a shrug for summer-time wearing. I’m working this one in Plymouth’s Cleo (a DK-weight, mercerized cotton which is a DREAM to knit) in a natural white color. The border pattern, a stylized blooming flower, is a stitch pattern I modified from Barbara Walker’s A Treasury of Knitting Patterns * I love the stitch-definition of the Cleo and the natural white will go with lots and lots of things. The shrug is at the point of dividing for the underarms and will have a v-neck front with a single button closure. The sleeves will be worked from the armhole down, seamlessly of course (I hate to sew). Fun huh?

*… as an aside, if you want to get into designing your own hand-knits, Barbara Walker’s treasuries (there are three others: A Second Treasury, Charted Knitting Designs, and A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns) are well-worth their weight in gold!

On the reading table: just about finished with our Brotherband read-aloud and I have to say that book 2, The Invaders, is as good, or maybe better, a story as the first book … and such fun to read-aloud!

My knitting reading is the Sock-Yarn Shawls by Jen Lucas — this one is packed with 15 really nice shawls done in sock yarn. She has great tips on designing and making your own shawls and the ones she shows are uniquely constructed to get the creative juices flowing — definitely a keeper.

My spiritual reading: I’m finishing up Prayer by Pope Benedict XVI … and really finding it interesting. He writes with such a gentle spirit and love for all. Enriching my prayer life is one of my goals this year, so this fits in quite nicely. I’ve also started reading a book by a secular historian titled, Francis: Man of Prayer. Escobar does a great job of placing Pope Francis and the Jesuits in historical context … but he’s a bit over-negative about Pope Francis’ predecessors. My take is that if it hadn’t been for Pope John Paul or Pope Benedict, the Church wouldn’t have been ready for the teachings of Pope Francis. I’ll finish it and give a more full review in the next week or two.

So … what’s on your needles and reading table …. wanna come over to Ginny’s and play ….
