Yarn-along: February 6, 2013
Good morning!
Today’s yarn-along is all about color in knitting. I just finished the Chill-Chaser Cowl (in the longer version) in time for a class I’m teaching on Sunday afternoon out at the yarn shop. This cowl is wonderfully warm with the additional length (the shorter version is 18″ while this longer one is 48″) and the addition of a contrast “lining” that allows for the stranded colorwork to be hidden (that’s the bit of green you see poking out below the red/brown ribbing. Both cowls are done in Tatamy Tweed … a cotton/acrlyic blend perfect for those with wool allergies … which knits up to a nice chill-chasingly warm fabric with good definition.
The half-knitted item is another version of my Andean Winter poncho; the original was knit with Encore Chunky in natural white and black. This version is for inclusion in Knit Picks’ IDP (I have 16 designs currently available thru KP). I am using KP’s Swish Bulky (a luscious washable merino) in Bare and Hollyberry. It’s coming out quite nicely … I’m onto the cable portion and have decided to bring them straight down off the colorwork rather than have them swirl around as in the original.

This is a great pattern for those who haven’t done much (if any colorwork) since the stitches are large and the changes are rhythmic.
We have been doing some reading around here, too! We finished that fabulous read-aloud, The King’s Gambit (review coming tomorrow here), and have returned to reading The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. What a great tale of family and Catholic traditions, and sacrifice and love!
I finished Dr. Schreck’s book on the encyclicals of Pope JP2 (a must-read for Catholics!) and have delved into that gorgeous A Welsh Childhood by Alice Thomas Ellis. My EZ reading for the month is her Knitter’s Almanac, since it’s her second book and we’re in the second month!
I love this book … why … well, here’s a typical quote:
But I can knit. I knit all year, day in, day out. It is my passion, and I rarely knit the same thing twice the same way. (pg2)
See what I mean? EZ and I are definitely knit from the same ball of yarn!
