~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~ Ginny at small things

Yarn-along – September 18, 2013

This has been one of those weeks …

  • the good: got to spend a few days with a dear friend’s lovely daughter; received the just-published Lace One Skein Wonders with my design on page 242; went to a dear friend’s Christening in Annapolis … just dh and I!; had a good week of school; got to Ikea and drooled over all the things I want
  • the bad: had to say goodbye to a dear friend’s lovely daughter; van started acting up; weather (which has been very fall-like with windows wide open, is forecast to be muggy and stormy all weekend
  • the ugly: $1000+ to fix van (but we do have brand-spanking-new brakes … the whole calipers, pads, hoses, etc … on the front tires now!)
  • In the final analysis, it’s been a pretty good week: we’re scheduled to craft with some of Kit’s friends tomorrow. They’ll be working on crafts to sell at the Mary’s Shelter Bazaar, scheduled for November. I love crafting with these girls because they are so open to trying everything and doing their best possible job … and Kit always makes something yummy for us to eat during the crafting!

On my reading table: Steal Like an Artist was mentioned in someone’s yarn-along last week. It’s a small volume but packed with good, creative advice for all craftspeople! Love it. I’ve also got Martha Stewart’s Favorite Crafts for Kids is packed with fun crafts to for kids to make and give — perfect for the girls coming tomorrow; you may not like Martha, but she sure does produce some fantastic crafty books. Finally, on my reading pile is Stitch Savvy: 25 Skill Building Projects to Take Your Sewing Technique to the Next Level is the best sewing book I’ve seen in a long time. Deborah Moebes, the author, takes the reader step-by-step thru projects that build on techniques to make the reader a better seamstress; the book has a hidden spiral, so it lays flat when you’re working with it and the projects and tips are fabulous. I’ll be using this for Kit’s home ec class this year.

On my needles: I’ve begun a cozy blanket-bag for my niece’s little one who will be born in November. I love the idea of a blanket bag — babies can’t kick it off and also, won’t get tangled in loose blankets. Mine is done in washable wool with colorwork (to make the bag extra warm) — but the charted designs have short “floats” to avoid toes getting caught on the inside! I’ll finish off the bag with a nice wide rib to fit up under the baby’s arms. Excited to get this one done.

And here’s a sneak peak at a design I just finished up: the September Shawlette is done in Spring Gate Farm’s cashmere/merino/silk blend. It’s got cool, undulating lace and the colors are beautiful … what do you think?
