~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~ Ginny at small things

Yarn-along: March 5, 2014

Good morning! After two days of snowdays (and temps hovering around zero), dh and HamBone headed back to school today. It’s currently (0700) 21 degrees and crystal clear … supposed to get up to 42, a veritable heat wave. Still lots of snow on the ground but the roads look dry.

It’s Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten journey to Easter. As I get older, I realize the great blessings inherent in this journey: I am forced to slow down, to be more deliberate about meal-planning and scheduling, to spend time musing on my journey to Heaven … and what I need to amend in my own life to ensure the path is a bit straighter and less circuitous. Many folks “give up” something — which I do, too — but I have found that when I add things (such as prayer time in the morning … musing over the readings of the day before bed) the Lenten journey is more fruitful and beneficial.

As you can see in the picture, my Lenten reading is good stuff:

  1. Magnificat Lenten Companion — single page meditation, prayer and suggested penance for each day of Lent.
  2. Encountering Christ: homilies, letters and addresses of Cardinal Jorge BergoglioThese writings of now-Pope Francis are filled with provocative “calls to action” to live a better Catholic life: to love the poor, act always with simplicity and humility, to evangelize. In this way, I will encounter Christ.
  3. The Way of the Crossby Caryll Houselander is my favorite Lenten read, particularly as Holy Week nears. Houselander is a near-mystic in her meditations on each station of the Cross. The beauty of her words … the word-pictures she creates … help center me and focus my mind and heart on the Passion.

My knitting continues throughout Lent. The reason there is no knitting shown in the picture is that I am in the midst of a design for publication — a design for the 2nd Unofficial Downton Abbey Knits. Isn’t that cool? I’m using Zealana Air, a glorious blend of cashmere, brushtail possum down, and mulberry silk in slate blue. It’s like knitting with a cloud.

So what are you reading and knitting on this first day of Lent? Wanna come play?sig block
