But Mousie, thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men
Gang aft agley,
An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!
by Robert Burns … an excerpt from To A Mouse
and boy did my plans for this week “gang aft agley” (often go awry)! The Burns’s poem is an apology to a mouse that has been disturbed by a plow. It is also the line from which Steinbeck got his book title, Of Mice and Men, a book all about plans and dreams going “south” and a most depressing book (at least I thought so in high school).
But that is how my week went: I planned on a full week of school … I planned on homeschool PE today … I planned on getting work done and knitting done and all kinds of things done.
But gang aft agley!
The frigid cold weather here in Virginia helped give the highschoolers a full week home: last Friday they were off for a teacher workday … Monday was a holiday (for MLK Day) …. Tuesday we had a forecast of lots of snow so the County closed the schools …. Wednesday they did go up to school, to participate in the March for Life … Thursday was too cold with too much ice on the ground so the County closed schools again … today they had a 2-hour delay …
That means that the only day our little homeschool could school was Wednesday! Yep, one whole day of school for a week. This is not good, this is not right. So today we cancel playing around … we cancel homeschool pe … and we will knuckle-down and get something done.
Don’t get me wrong — I think it was good the kids and dh were home. The temps haven’t gotten above 20 around here (wreaking havoc with our heat pump .. but we never lost power, thank God!) all week and the roads have a nice glaze on them.
But, having them home means homeschooling gets all catty-wumpus and placed on the proverbial back-burner!
So today I declare a pajama day (so we’re not tempted to go anywhere) … and we’ll do school all day (with a bit of baking thrown in to help keep the house cozy warm).
What’s your day look like … any upset to your plans … do your plans gang aft agley as often as mine?
